The Roar of the Crowd and the Ethics of Fandom

Coach K is lucky. Seriously.
I know this may be blasphemy to the ears of some (if not all) Duke students, but hear me out.
I’m not saying that he’s fortunate to have won four national championships, to have secured twelve ACC regular season championships and twelve ACC titles, and to have qualified for eleven Final Fours. He’s obviously unparalleled in the coaching arena.
Nor am I suggesting that he’s lucky to have gotten such great players over the years to carry him to these championships. Success breeds success, and once he molded his first championship team, the seeds for the later ones had already been planted.
But one factor—unique to Duke—influences the game greatly, yet Coach K doesn’t realize its impact, even as this element helps him pile up the wins on a regular basis.
This factor? The Cameron Crazies.

Countdown to Craziness

It was incredible, stupendous, spectacular, and nothing out of the ordinary. It was a full house Friday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium as thousands of people witnessed the unveiling of the 2010-2011 men’s basketball team.
After a plethora of anxious students finally entered the stadium, the sound level was turned up to the max throughout the night, screaming for just about anything that was thrown their way. Students laughed as Miles Plumlee entered on a unicycle, cheered for the videos of past Duke teams, roared in approval of the team during the Blue vs. White scrimmage and screamed for the always entertaining dunk contest as a grand finale. The event caused quite a commotion and did what it was expected to do: get everyone pumped for what should be a very good upcoming season for the men’s basketball team; however, there is always more than meets the eye when it comes to these sorts of nights.
